Outbound Procedures

During Westerly operations, all departures except TIGER and WIZAD departures contact the appropriate area sector once airborne. During Easterly operations, all departures except SFD departures contact the appropriate area sector once airborne.

SFD (08) and TIGER/WIZAD (26) departures are worked by FIN (Or INT if not online) due to the close proximity to the intermediate and final approach areas.

Aircraft should be transferred by ADC to the area sectors straight after departure, preferably no later than 2000ft:

  • If the relevant TMA sector is not online, Departures should be handed to S20.
  • If TMA Sectors and S20 are not online, Departures should be handed to S10.
  • If TMA Sectors, S20 and S10 are not online, Departures should be handed to INT
  • If TMA Sectors, S20, S10 and INT are not online, Departures should be transferred to UNICOM.

Most Gatwick departures depart out to the north and do not interfere with the RMA. There are some that transit through the RMA to the south. They will not normally be climbed above the initial SID level until they have left the RMA, however, if the traffic situation allows, they can be climbed higher.

Most Gatwick departures operate on a free flow system - The tower doesn't have to call up for a release on every aircraft. There are however some Departures where the Tower has to call up FIN (or INT if FIN isn't online) and ask for a release. These are WIZAD, TIGER and BIG departures.

Identification

All departures should be instructed to Squawk IDENT on first contact to validate the mode A. Aircraft must also be instructed to report their passing altitude (if omitted from the first call) to verify the Mode C readout. (Readout has to be +/- 200ft from the reported altitude)

Departure Separations

Separation between departing aircraft is applied so that after one aircraft takes off, the next aircraft does not take-off with less than the number of minutes needed. There are 3 departure separation methods in use at Gatwick; Vortex, Route and Speed separation. When calculating the correct departure separation, the highest of the 3 values is the one to use.

When a faster aircraft follows a slower aircraft, the minimum separation is increased by one minute for each successive group (e.g. Group 3 following Group 2, add 1 minute. Group 3 following Group 0, add 3 minutes)

The time is counted from the moment the first aircraft begins its takeoff roll. If the first aircraft commences a full length take-off and the following aircraft departs from an intersection, the spacing should be increased to 3 minutes.

SFD (08) Departures

During Easterly operations, SFD Departures should be transferred to FIN (or INT if FIN isn't online) after departure due to the fact that they cross the intermediate and final approach areas. FIN will climb the aircraft to MSL when able, and handoff to the relevant area sector.

TIGER/WIZAD (26) Departures

TIGER & WIZAD departures are used by ATC to alleviate airspace congestion. They should not be used for flight planning purposes.

During Westerly operations, TIGER and WIZAD departures should be transferred to FIN (or INT if FIN isn't online) after departure due to the fact that they cross the intermediate and final approach areas. FIN will climb the aircraft to MSL when able and handoff to the relevant area sector.

WIZAD and TIGER SIDS are not available to the following aircraft types:
- B701/703
- B721/722
- DC8
- DC9
- BA11
- TU34
- TU54
- IL62

SFD/BOGNA/HARDY Restrictions

BOGNA and HARDY departures are not to be issued between 2300 local and 0559 local due to environmental reasons. During these hours, aircraft should be issued with the appropriate SFD SID.

SFD departures are not to be issued between 0600 local and 2259 local due to environmental reasons. During these hours, aircraft should be issued with the appropriate BOGNA/HARDY SID.
