Low Level Procedures

The Bristol Control Zone and Control Area are both Class D airspace. The rules for VFR flights within this airspace are:
- Remain at least 1500 metres horizontally and 1000ft vertically away from cloud and in a flight visibility of at least 5km
- Fixed wing aircraft at speeds of 140kts or less are to remain clear of cloud, in sight of the surface and in a flight visibility of 5km
- Helicopters are to remain clear of cloud and in sight of the surface

SSR Code allocation

Bristol SSR code allocation is 4610 - 4637.

VFR Transit

VFR transits must not penetrate the ATZ without approval from AIR. A gap should be made in the arrival stream to facilitate the crossing. Crossing overhead the airffield should be made at the landing threshold of the runway in use.

VFR inbounds/outbounds

All VFR inbounds/outbounds must route via a valid VRP.

The following VRP's have been established for aircraft operating to and from Bristol airport:
- Barrow Tanks Reservoir
- Bath Racecourse
- Cheddar Reservoir
- Chew Valley
- Churchill
- Clevedon
- East Nailsea
- Frome
- Hicks Gate Roundabout
- M4 Junction 18
- M5 Sedgemoor Services
- M5 Avon Bridge
- Old Severn Bridge
- Radstock
- Wells Mast
- Weston Aerodrome

When online, all VFR inbounds and outbounds should be coordinated with the VFR position. All VFR aircraft operating inside the zone must be instructed to operate not above altitude 2000ft.

VFR Circuit Traffic

All VFR circuits should be performed to the south of the field (Left hand runway 27, right hand runway 09). Circuit height is not above 1000ft QFE, 1600ft QNH.

Special VFR

Special VFR flights may be authorised in the Bristol CTR. SVFR clearances to operate within the Bristol CTR, for the purpose of proceeding to or from the airport are not to be granted to fixed wing aircraft if the reported visibility at the airport is less than 3km or the reported cloud ceiling is less than 1000ft.

Air Traffic Services Outside Controlled Airspace (ATSOCA)

ATSOCA may be given provided that it does not adversely affect operations at Bristol. A service may be provided up to FL95 within 40nm of the airfield.

Controllers must not give a Deconfliction service or radar vectors under a traffic service to aircraft below 3000ft within 25nm from the airfield. A radar service outside of 40nm must not be given.
