Outbound Procedures

All Manchester departures contact the appropriate area sector once airborne. They have no contact with Manchester Directors.

Aircraft should be transferred by ADC to the area sectors straight after departure, preferably no later than 2000ft.

  • If the relevant TMA sector is not online, Departures should be handed to Scottish TLA.
  • If all TMA Sectors are not online, Departures should be handed to Scottish West Coast.
  • If all Scottish Sectors are not online, Departures should be handed to S10.
  • If all TMA Sectors, West Coast and S10 are not online, Departures should be handed to INT N/INT S
  • If none of the units mentioned above are not online, Departures should be released passing 2500ft.

Manchester departures will transit through the Radar Manoeuvring Area following their SID routes. Departures will not normally be climbed above 5000ft until they have left the RMA, however, if the traffic situation allows, they can be climbed higher.

Manchester Departures operate on a free flow system - The tower doesn't have to call up for a release on every aircraft.

HON/LISTO 23L/23R Departures

Manchester has two southbound departures for noise abatement reasons. Due to incidents in the past regarding aircraft flying the wrong departure, It is imperative that aircraft comply strictly with the SID that has been issued. When an aircraft is at or approaching the holding point, the AIR controller must confirm that southbound aircraft (when on Westerlies) have planned the SID that they have been cleared. e.g. "SHT3F, hold at J1, confirm HON 1R departure".

Identification

Manchester tower will idenify departures using the take-off method prior to hand-off and therefore an IDENT is not required. Aircraft must be instructed to report their passing altitude (if omitted from the first call) to verify the Mode C readout. (Readout has to be +/- 200ft from the reported altitude).

Departure Separations

Separation between departing aircraft is applied so that after one aircraft takes off, the next aircraft does not take-off with less than the number of minutes needed. There are 3 departure separation methods in use at Manchester; Vortex, Route and Speed separation. When calculating the correct departure separation, the highest of the 3 values is the one to use.

Route Separation

For the purpose of route separation, the SIDs are grouped as follows:

  • WEST: WAL / MONTY / NOKIN departures (to Wallasey sector)
  • EAST: POL / DESIG departures (to East sector)

When a faster aircraft follows a slower aircraft, the minimum separation is increased by one minute for each successive group (e.g. Group 3 following Group 2, add 1 minute. Group 3 following Group 0, add 3 minutes)

The time is counted from the moment the first aircraft begins its takeoff roll. If the first aircraft commences a full length take-off and the following aircraft departs from an intersection, the spacing should be increased to 3 minutes.
