Lighting

Runway Lighting

  • High Intensity colour coded centre line lights at 15 metre intervals (05L/23R).
  • High Intensity colour coded centre line lights at 30 metre intervals (05R/23L).
  • Bi-directional High Intensity flush fitted edge lights spaced 60 metres apart (05L/23R).
  • Bi-directional High Intensity flush fitted edge lights spaced 61 metres apart (05R/23L).
  • Touchdown zone lights consisting of bars of 4 white lights. The bars are spaced at 77 metre intervals longitudinally and cover the first 900 metres of the runway.
  • High Intensity green threshold lights stretching the whole width of the runway, with flush green wing bars.
  • High Intensity red end bar lights across the whole width at the upwind end of the runway (Red wingbars on 05R only).

PAPIs are installed on all runways and consist of 4 units on the left (On the right on 05L), providing guidance in maintaining the required 3 degree approach angle.

Approach Lighting

  • 914 metre high white High intensity coded centre line with 5 crossbars (05L/23R)
  • 900 metre high white High intensity coded centre line with 5 crossbars (05R/23L)
  • The last 300 metres of approach lighting includes Supplementary Approach lights (SALS) consisting of 9 barrettes of 4 white lights dispersed about the centre line, and the same number of 4 red light barrettes either side. All the lights are at 30 metres spacing (05L/23R ONLY)

Noise

The airport is surrounded by many built up areas. Various procedures have been designed to minimise disturbance to the local communities.

Preferential Selection of Runway

Manchester operates a preferential runway scheme, whereby the Westerly runways (23L/R) will be used for take-off and landing in preference to the Easterly runways (05L/R), unless wind, or other factors dictate. Generally, it is to be said that:

"Runway 23R/L will normally be used in preference to 05L/R when the tailwind component is no greater than 5kts and the surface is dry"

Runway 23L is only available for landing in case of emergencies as there is no precision approach available and traffic will have to backtrack to vacate. Runway 05R is not available for departures.

Dual runway operations are normally in force between 0630-1030 and 1600-2000 Mon-Fri, 0630-1030 Sat, 1600-2000 Sun (all times local). When dual runway operations are in force, 23R/05R are used for arrivals and 23L/05L are used for departures. Outside these times, single runway operations on 23R/05L are in force

The choice of runway configuration will be the decision of ADC.

Night Noise Restrictions

Jet aircraft operating into and out of Manchester at night are subject to limits and operating restrictions. Between 2300 and 0700 local: - Visual approaches will not be permitted - Inbound aircraft are to be vectored onto a closing heading which will intercept the aircraft on the extended centreline no closer than 7nm from touchdown. - Descent clearance below 3000ft is not to be given until the aircraft is 10nm from touchdown
