Area of Responsibility

The area of responsibility for Manchester includes the Manchester Radar Manoeuvring Area (RMA), the Manchester Control Zone, the Manchester Control Area and the airspace within 40nm of Manchester, from the time and place at which:

  • Arriving aircraft are released by area until control is transferred to Aerodrome Control (ADC)
  • Over flying aircraft are transferred from an adjacent sector, until such time as control is either returned to the previous sector or passed onto another sector.
  • Aircraft from outside controlled airspace place themselves under the control of Manchester until transfer to another unit or until they place themselves out of the control of Manchester.

The Manchester approach function is handled by 3 radar controllers (INT S, INT N and FIN). INT S is responsible for the DAYNE stack. INT N is responsible for the MIRSI and ROSUN stacks.

The two intermediate radar controllers are responsible for taking traffic from their respective holding stacks and combining them into a single stream to be handed to the Final Director. The Final Director takes these two streams and merges the traffic to establish on the ILS in a safe and expeditious manner.

Manchester is also responsible for the Intermediate Approach function for Woodford (EGCD).

A subsidiary task of Manchester Radar is to provide a service to inbound, outbound and transiting VFR/SVFR traffic operating within the Manchester Control Zone, including the low level corridor.
