Area of Responsibility

The area of responsibility for Birmingham includes the Birmingham Control Zone, the Birmingham Control Area, the part of the Daventry CTA that overlies the Birmingham CTA up to FL85 from the time and place at which:

  • Arriving aircraft are released by area until control is transferred to Aerodrome Control (ADC)
  • Departing aircraft are transferred from Birmingham ADC, until they are transferred to the appropriate area sector
  • Over flying aircraft are transferred from an adjacent sector, until such time as control is either returned to the previous sector or passed onto another sector.
  • Aircraft from outside controlled airspace place themselves under the control of Birmingham until transfer to another unit or until they place themselves out of the control of Birmingham.

The Birmingham approach function is divided into 2 positions; Intermediate Director (INT) and Final Director (FIN). INT is responsible for the CHASE and GROVE stacks.

The intermediate director is responsible for taking traffic from the holding stacks and combining them into a single stream to be handed to the Final Director. The Final Director then takes this stream and establishes the traffic on the ILS in a safe and expeditious manner.
